Founded in Cokesbury, South Carolina in 1870, Allen University was originally named Payne Institute. It was in 1880 that the school moved to Columbia and was renamed Allen University to honor Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. It is a private four-year liberal arts college that is a coeducational, historically black college that runs under the followings of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
They offer studies in seven major academic areas including biology, business administration, chemistry, English, math, music and social science. They also have athletic programs that include basketball, track & field, golf, bowling, volleyball, creative dance and intramural sports.
It is not a very large school, having an enrollment of approximately 600 students. However, Allen University operates very much like a larger university when it comes to campus life. There are many clubs and organizations, in addition to the sports teams, that students are encouraged to join. You will find everything from music groups and religious organizations to your more common fraternities and sororities. They even have a School for Professional Adults that caters to working individuals who wish to complete a degree in Business Administration or Religion.
