Fort Jackson, South Carolina has played an important part of American history since 1917. Since that time when men were fighting in World War I, Fort Jackson has proudly supported the U.S. Army. It is the largest and most active initial Entry Training Center in the U.S. Army. Each year 50% of all soldiers and 70% of the women in the army are trained here. That is approximately 50,000 basic training and advanced individual training soldiers a year.
Fort Jackson is a huge compound covering more than 52,000 acres of land. The Fort Jackson community consists of soldiers, civilians, retirees and family members. This area is considered home to 3,900 active duty soldiers and their families.
In addition to the training center you will also find the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, the U.S. Army Chaplains Center and School and the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment.
Over the years Fort Jackson has gone through many changes and many improvements. In 1964 permanent steel and concrete building were finally constructed to house the troops. Prior to that year all troops were house in wooden barracks. It was a welcomed and much needed change.
Each year over 100,000 family members come here to attend Friday afternoon basic training graduation. This takes places 41 times a year and is an extremely patriotic event.
For the first time in 50 years the President of the United State, George W. Bush, visited the compound for graduation. It was an uplifting an exciting addition to the ceremony.
