People visit the USC campus for many reasons. Some are visiting students. Some are prospective students checking it out and others want to visit a university that is filled with so much history. In addition, the USC campus is home to many other South Carolina attractions, like The Koger Center for the Arts and The McKissick Museum.

The university opened in 1805 under the name South Carolina College and only had 1 one building. Since then it has continued to grow and expand. In 1906 the name was officially changed to the University of South Carolina. It had become the first state supported school in South Carolina to receive regional accreditation. The university offers 350 degree programs at 14 degree-granting colleges. It’s a very popular school and enrollment is proof of that. In the fall of 2006 enrollment topped out at over 27,000 students.

The Koger Center for the Arts is located on the campus of The University of South Carolina and is also owned and operated by the university. It has been open since 1989 and was named for Ira & Nancy Koger. It is a beautiful center that celebrates theater and the performing arts and draws in many visitors each year. On average about 535 events take place each year at the Koger Center for the Arts, in addition to music classes and rehearsals. It is also the regular performance hall for the USC Symphony Orchestra. If you would like to attend one of their magnificent shows then check out their website for a full calendar of events.

The McKissick Museum is also located at The University of South Carolina. It was established in 1976 in order to house under one roof the many object collections from various departments and colleges on the campus.  Many of these collections date back to the early 1800’s and give insight into the long history of the University.

Whatever your reason for visiting the USC campus, plan to stay at The Marriott Columbia Hotel for its convenience to the downtown area.
